IOWA CITY — THE wind turbines that rise out of the cornfields here reminded me on a recent drive of one postelection truth, even in the red state of Iowa.
As President-elect Donald J. Trump considers whether to break the United States commitment to the Paris climate accord, the rise of clean energy across the heartland is already too well entrenched to be reversed.
By 2020, thanks to MidAmerican Energy’s planned $3.6 billion addition to its enormous wind turbine operations, 85 percent of its Iowa customers will be electrified by clean energy. Meanwhile, Moxie Solar, named the fastest-growing local business by The Corridor Business Journal of Iowa, is installing solar panels on my house, and is part of a solar industry that now employs 200,000 nationwide.
Doomsday scenarios about the climate have abounded in the aftermath of the November election. But responsibility for effectively reining in carbon emissions also rests with business, and with the nation’s cities and states. Those are the battlegrounds. Worldwide, cities produce as much as 70 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.
Many of the planet’s cities lie along the coasts and are threatened by slowly rising seas. Seventy percent of those cities are already dealing with extreme weather like drought and flooding. Add in aging infrastructure and waves of migrants and it is obvious that city planners, mayors and governors have had to re-envision how their cities generate energy and provide food and transportation.
“The concept of a regenerative city could indeed become a new vision for cities,” the Germany-based World Future Council reported recently. “It stands for cities that not only minimize negative impact but can actually have a positive, beneficial role to play within the natural ecosystem from which they depend. Cities have to constantly regenerate the resources they absorb.”
This idea won broad support at a recent gathering of city leaders from around the world in Quito, Ecuador, hosted by the United Nations. The Habitat III conference approved a “new urban agenda” that urges cities to adapt to climate change but minimize their harm to the environment and move to sustainable economies.
In a changing climate, these approaches make sense. As Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York, told the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce recently, “Cities, businesses and citizens will continue reducing emissions, because they have concluded — just as China has — that doing so is in their own self-interest.”
With or without significant federal support, reducing greenhouse gas emissions will require major private investment, as it has here in Iowa, and ambitious private-public initiatives from mayors and governors. We need to activate a new era of “regenerative” cities and states.
California’s recent move to reduce its carbon emissions by 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 is a hopeful shift that other cities and states should emulate. This would involve setting high benchmarks for developing green enterprise zones, renewable energy, cultivating food locally, restoring biodiversity, planting more trees and emphasizing walkability, low-carbon transportation and zero waste.
Following this regenerative approach, the Australian city of Adelaide reduced its carbon emissions by 20 percent from 2007 to 2013, even as the population grew by 27 percent and the economy increased by 28 percent. The city experienced a boom in green jobs, the development of walkable neighborhoods powered by solar energy, the conversion of urban waste to compost and a revamped local food industry. The city also planted three million trees to absorb carbon dioxide.
Over 10,000 climate initiatives are underway in cities worldwide, according to the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, which represents 80 major cities. In nearby Des Moines, for instance, Mayor Frank Cownie recently committed the city to reducing its energy consumption 50 percent by 2030 and becoming “carbon neutral” by 2050.
Initiatives like those have become a “fill the potholes” reality for many mayors, regardless of political games in Washington. In San Diego, the Republican mayor, Kevin Faulconer, helped to push through a climate action plan that commits the city to 100 percent renewable energy by 2035. Other cities are following his lead.
“Dull, inert cities, it is true, do contain the seeds of their own destruction and little else,” the urban visionary Jane Jacobs wrote. “But lively, diverse, intense cities contain the seeds of their own regeneration, with energy enough to carry over for problems and needs outside themselves.”
In an age of climate change, and a possible shift in the federal government’s priority on climate action, never have those words been truer.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Pictures

At the groundbreaking ceremony on November 13th, cohousing members, neighbors, friends, family and prospective members gathered to celebrate. Excitement was running high under a sunny sky, the hillside green, the markers for future buildings showing above the grass. It was easy to imagine life at Prairie Hill in just a few months: morning beverages in the commonhouse coffee nook, sharing rides to cultural offerings in the city, cultivating flowers and vegetables in small kitchen gardens or in the large ones above, bicycling around the neighborhood, and living a life more ecologically sound than private homes could provide. It is the birthing of a new lifestyle, at least in this city. But maybe just the wave of the future...

Press Release: Groundbreaking Set for Prairie Hill, Iowa's First Cohousing Community



Iowa City Cohousing (ICCH) will break ground Sunday, Nov. 13, at 3:00 p.m., for Prairie Hill Cohousing Community, a sustainable neighborhood, located off Miller Avenue between West Benton Street and Highway 1. Supporters and other interested persons are invited to bring a shovel and join in the celebration. The actual 'ground breaking' will occur at 3:30.

The community of 36 sustainably built attached homes and a common house for shared meals and activities is being developed on an eight-acre site within walking and biking distance of the University of Iowa and downtown Iowa City. The members of ICCH are the developers of the $8 million project, and they will be first residents of what will be an economically and socially diverse, multigenerational community.

Iowa City Cohousing is committed to providing some workforce housing for income-qualified applicants. The project has been awarded grants for down payment assistance and tax credits to build affordable homes.

Cohousing is a form of neighborhood development established in Denmark in the 1970's and imported to the U.S. in the 1990's. Residents own small private homes and share common facilities, resources and management of their community. There are over 150 established cohousing communities in the U.S. and more than 100 more in some stage of development. Prairie Hill will be the first cohousing community in Iowa.

Cohousing developments are designed to foster neighborliness and friendly interdependence and to balance community and privacy. Owner-occupied homes in Prairie Hill will cluster around the central common house where residents will pick up mail, do laundry and share several meals a week. Guest rooms and spaces for group activities in the common house permit members to live comfortably in smaller spaces.

Homes will range from 515-square foot studio apartments in the common house to 1600-square foot two-story duplexes with up to four bedrooms. Units will be built in clusters of two-story duplexes, four flats in two-story buildings, and single-level townhouses. About half the homes have been sold.

Prairie Hill will be an eco-community planned according to permaculture principles of sustainability. Half of the 8-acre site will be preserved for gardens and orchards to grow produce for use in the community kitchen. Super-insulated, all-electric green homes will be surrounded by individual kitchen gardens.

The development has been carefully planned to provide opportunities for solar installations, manage stormwater on site and meet requirements for LEED certification. Some residents will choose options to make their home near net zero.

To develop the plans, Iowa City Cohousing has worked with Iowa City architects John F. Shaw and Martha Norbeck of C-wise Design and Consulting, and civil engineers of HBK Engineering. The general contractor is APEX Construction Co. Great Western Bank will finance construction.

Blooming Trees for Prairie Hill Streetscape

The Land Committee deals with all things horticultural. And on a varied site like the one we have at Prairie Hill, there are many issues to be considered: plantings around buildings, plantings around retaining walls, size and shape of vegetable gardens, placement of orchards, prairie plantings, paths, intentional water retention, soil, mulch, habitat for birds, and the list goes on. One recent accomplishment is a plan for the "street trees" that will grow along Miller Avenue on either side of our entrance.

We are fortunate to have a landscape expert in Marcia Shaffer, and here's what she says about the choice of the trees on the plan below:

In planning the street trees, I was very conscious that this is the first impression people will have of us as they drive by. I planned trees that would create a succession of bloom from the earliest days of spring to the middle of June. After the blooms are gone there is a period of time of fruit development. The crab apples were chosen for their small fruit size, which is what the birds like. The redbuds have a pod and the chickadees will work on the pods to get the seed out. Redbuds, fringe trees and serviceberry also have yellow or red fall color. Instead of single specimen trees, groups will be planted and then repeated along the street to give a more natural appearance. Notice the welcoming grove of serviceberry at the entrance. Toward the park, fringe trees will create a special effect first with their strap-like petals and blue fruit. They turn a lovely yellow in the fall. We are anxious to start planning more trees and shrubs along our little private street toward the commonhouse.



Above you see a sketch of Marcia's plan. Unfortunately it is very, very light. But still it gives an idea of how this will look, once planted. We will need to wait until the heavy machinery of the construction phase is done before putting these trees in the ground, but our imaginations can already see the spring, summer and fall beauty they'll provide.
